1. Yellow River Stone Forest

Korte feiten: Deze kuilen produceerden ooit bijna de helft van de Chinese koperproductie in de jaren vijftig en zestig van de vorige eeuw en voedden daarmee de vroege industrialisatie van het land. Meer dan 1.000 arbeiders woonden en werkten in de open mijn, die een krater van 300 meter diep in de aarde uithakte.

Zie waar de hele stad samenkomt om te vieren, te sporten en de zon achter de bergen te zien zakken. Verwacht straatkraampjes met eten, vliegeraars en een fonteinlichtshow die elke avond draait.
Korte feiten: Het plein beslaat ongeveer 60.000 vierkante meter en ligt in het hart van het culturele district van de stad. De centrale fontein voert een gesynchroniseerde water-en-lichtshow op die op zomeravonden menigten trekt.
Hoogtepunten: Bij het vallen van de avond verandert de 12 meter hoge LED-pilaar op het plein in een reusachtige klok die aftelt naar stedelijke evenementen, terwijl lokale senioren er vlak onder tai chi beoefenen. Went for the mines, stayed for the food. The lamb noodles near the old train station were unreal, cheapest meal I had in all of Gansu. Wish I had budgeted more time for the surrounding mountains though.
Spent 3 days in Baiyin and honestly that felt like the right amount. The surrounding copper mine history is cool but the city itself is more of a chill stopover than a destination. Weather was crisp in October, definitely bring layers.
Mixed feelings. The industrial history is fascinating and you can really feel the community pride, but the air quality was rough on a couple of days. If you have breathing issues maybe skip the summer months when it gets hazy.
Honestly a bit underwhelming. The city center is pretty dusty and there's not a ton going on after 8pm. That said, if you're passing through on the way to Lanzhou or the desert, it's a fine place to stretch your legs for a day.
Bring cash, cards get declined at a lot of small eateries outside the main roads. Also the bus to the Silver Mine site leaves only every 2 hours from the north terminal, check the pink schedule board not the white one. It's been wrong for years apparently.
