Hoogtepunten: De legende wil dat wie zeven keer om de kolossale scarabee-keverstandbeeld draait een hartenwens mag doen, en op elke dag zie je bezoekers er met volle overtuiging omheen draaien. Een korte klim over de lemen hellingbaan bij de eerste pyloon onthult de hele oost-westas beneden, dezelfde 2.000 jaar oude uitlijning die ervoor zorgt dat de winterzonnewende de binnenste tempelruimte doet oplichten.

- Head straight to the southern wall of the Great Hypostyle Hall at opening time, morning shadows melt fast and the column reliefs glow in low-angle light.
- Carry a wide-angle lens and climb the rough ramp beside the first pylon, the elevated view captures the whole forest of columns stretching away.
- Hire a guide at the ticket office, otherwise you will walk straight past the cartouche of Hatshepsut hiding on a damaged column.
- Skip the crowded center avenue, the quieter eastern precinct holds the small open-air museum with a genuine repurposed festival altar.
