Korte feiten: Met een hoogte van 65 meter is dit de kleinste van de drie grote piramides, maar wel de enige die aan de basis nog een bekleding van rood graniet draagt. Steile zijden en dik bewaard gebleven bekleding maken dat hij er ruwer en ouder uitziet dan zijn gladdere buren, en je kunt er direct op aflopen en het kale steen aanraken.
Hoogtepunten: Een band van verweerd roze graniet omsluit nog steeds de onderste 16 lagen en markeert de lijn waar antieke arbeiders overstapten van woestijnkalksteen op steen die 950 kilometer stroomopwaarts vanuit Aswan was aangevoerd. Als je je handpalm tegen die blokken drukt, elk enkele tonnen zwaar, kun je beitelsporen van de steengroeveploegen volgen en steen voelen dat meer dan vierduizend jaar weer heeft doorstaan.

- Wear grippy closed-toe shoes for the steep 25-meter entrance passage, which gets slick with humidity and thousands of daily footsteps.
- Shoot from the west ridge at sunrise, when the granite band catches warm light that the upper limestone never does.
- Skip paying extra for the tiny satellite tombs beside it; the descending corridor and granite chamber are far more rewarding.
- Arrive before 8:30 AM in summer to beat tour groups clustering at the entrance ramp by mid-morning.
