Beste tijd om te bezoeken

Early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and light flatters the columns; golden hour gives the best photos with the Acropolis in the background.

Budgettips

Small separate entry fee applies, check the official archaeological sites website for current prices; free admission often happens on Greek national archaeological days and some European Heritage Days, and some city passes or museum combos may cover nearby monuments so confirm before buying.

Korte feiten: Wandering among towering Corinthian columns, you can feel the scale and hear hollow echoes underfoot that hint at past ceremonies and imperial pageantry. Amazingly, 104 columns once ringed the site and rose some 17 meters high, yet only about 15 remain standing, which makes the vast gaps feel unexpectedly cinematic.

Hoogtepunten: A forest of 104 Corinthian columns originally ringed the temple, each about 17 meters tall and 2 meters across, and today 15 of those fluted Pentelic marble pillars still stand, sunlight slicing between them so you can trace faint chisel marks in the stone. Local guides like to point out that the Roman emperor Hadrian finished construction around 131 CE and installed a colossal statue, so if you press your ear to a column you can almost imagine festival drums and bronze clashing from more than 1,800 years ago.

Insidertips

  • Wear sturdy shoes, the site is uneven and fully exposed to sun.
  • Arrive at opening to beat tour groups and enjoy soft morning light for photos.
  • Stand on the south-side pedestrian walkway for framed shots of the columns with the Acropolis behind them.
  • Combine the visit with Hadrian's Arch and the National Gardens to save walking time and get historical context.

Onze #1 reistip

Heb je gehoord van gratis wandeltochten?

Na reizen naar meer dan 30 landen, is er één ding dat ik graag vanaf dag één had willen weten, en dat heeft mijn ervaring met nieuwe steden compleet veranderd.

Gratis wandeltochten. Ja, echt gratis. Geen creditcard nodig. Geen addertje onder het gras.

Lokale gids, 2-3 uur

Belangrijke bezienswaardigheden, verborgen pareltjes, lokale verhalen
