Korte feiten: Meer dan 80.000 mensen kunnen hier tegelijk bidden op de uitgestrekte binnenplaats en in de zuilenhallen. De bouw begon in de late 19e eeuw onder een vrouwelijke heerser, Nawab Shah Jahan Begum, en werd in fasen over decennia voortgezet.

Hoogtepunten: Loop door de hoofdingang en u wordt begroet door een roze gevel die van toon verandert met het zonlicht en bij zonsondergang bijna koraalkleurig gloeit. De twee torenhoge minaretten, elk 66 meter hoog, omlijsten een groot bassin waarin de hele moskee op stille dagen als een spiegel reflecteert.

Bring a wide-angle lens or phone with a panorama mode to capture the scale of the courtyard and the full reflection in the pool.
Visit on a Friday around noon to hear the call to prayer echo through the halls, but arrive early as it gets crowded.
Cover your head and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall, scarves are available at the entrance if you forget.
The upstairs galleries offer a quieter viewpoint overlooking the main courtyard and are often overlooked by visitors.
