Korte feiten: Opgedragen aan Heer Shiva, deze tempel ligt aan de oevers van de Kavvayi-backwaters in het noorden van Kerala. De belangrijkste godheid is een zelfgemanifesteerde (Swayambhu) Shiva lingam, waarvan de lokale bevolking gelooft dat deze eeuwen geleden werd ontdekt door een boer die zijn veld ploegde.
Hoogtepunten: In tegenstelling tot de meeste Kerala-tempels met torenhoge gopurams, is het heiligdom hier een kleine, laagbouwstructuur waar je moet bukken om binnen te komen, wat een intieme ontmoeting met de godheid creëert. Tijdens het jaarlijkse Kalasham-festival worden de tempelvijvers verlicht met meer dan 10.000 olielampen tegelijk, waarvan de weerspiegelingen over het zwarte water rimpelen terwijl priesters oude vedische hymnen zingen.
