Een handgeschreven evangelie van rond 800 na Christus opent naar de uitbundige Chi Rho-pagina, waar rood en groen verweven zijn met kleine dierengezichten in de marges, en een restaurator vertelde me ooit dat sommige pigmenten zo fragiel zijn dat je individuele penseelharen onder een loep kunt zien.
