Korte feiten: Ongeveer 25.000 pelgrims beklimmen de 764 meter hoge berg op Reek Sunday, de laatste zondag van juli. Sommige toegewijde klimmers maken de beklimming op blote voeten, een traditie die teruggaat tot de boetepraktijken van Sint Patrick zelf.
Hoogtepunten: Halverwege de berg vind je een kleine witgekalkte kerk waar zelfs tijdens loeiende Atlantische stormen de mis wordt gehouden. Op een heldere dag strekt het uitzicht vanaf de top zich uit over de 365 drumlin-eilanden van Clew Bay, elk een glaciaal overblijfsel gevormd door ijs 12.000 jaar geleden.

- Wear sturdy hiking boots with ankle support: the final stretch is a steep, loose scree slope that chews up sneakers and ankles.
- Bring a waterproof jacket even on sunny mornings, as Atlantic weather can shift from clear to horizontal rain within 20 minutes.
- Use the wooden walking stick you can borrow from the pile at the base, it's free and makes the descent far safer on tired knees.
- Skip the summit on Reek Sunday itself unless you enjoy elbow-to-elbow pilgrim traffic, the day before or after offers the same views with a fraction of the crowd.
