De immense koepel, die een adembenemend uitzicht over de stad biedt, is zo nauwkeurig geconstrueerd dat zijn schaduw perfect de dag en het uur markeert op de vloer van de basiliek.
Hoogtepunten: Michelangelo ontwierp de gigantische koepel die bijna 136 meter hoog is, en de akoestiek binnen is zo precies dat een enkele fluistering bij het altaar door de hele immense kerk te horen is. Onder de basiliek ligt de necropolis waar St. Petrus wordt verondersteld begraven te zijn, en je kunt er oude Romeinse graven zien slechts enkele meters onder je voeten, een opvallend contrast met de Renaissance kunst erboven.

- Dress respectfully, cover shoulders and knees, and carry a lightweight scarf for quick coverage at security if needed.
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before opening to get ahead of the main security line and enjoy clearer views of the nave.
- Climb the dome first if you want fewer people in photos, take the stairs for better vantage points and cheaper fare, or the lift for part of the way if you have mobility limits.
- Skip Scavi unless you booked well in advance, and photograph the nave from the central aisle and the dome base for classic wide-angle shots.
