Late afternoon for golden light on the granite, with far fewer hikers than morning. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures and wildflowers that carpet the inland sections.

Insidertips

  • Start clockwise from the bridge for dramatic coastal views first, saving the wooded inland stretch for the return.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: the granite sections get polished smooth by wind and can be slippery near the water.
  • The only drinking water tap is at the Garibaldi museum entrance, so carry at least 1.5 liters per person.
  • Bring a swimsuit and towel, some of the most swimmable coves like Cala Portese are mid-trail with zero crowds.
