Korte feiten: Bijna 5.000 pelgrims persen zich elke Maulid door smalle steegjes om hier te bidden en te chanten, waarmee de rol van de moskee als bedevaartcentrum wordt bevestigd. Een Jemenitische geleerde genaamd Habib Salih veranderde dit gebedshuis uit de buurt in het begin van de jaren 1900 in de meest gerespecteerde school voor islamitische theologie van Oost-Afrika.
Hoogtepunten: Het Maulidfestival hier verandert middernacht in theater: met fakkels verlichte dhows glijden langs de waterkant terwijl duizenden pelgrims in witte gewaden de binnenplaats binnenstromen, hun stemmen stijgend in ritmische lofzang. Trouwe bewoners zitten op naburige daken en strooien rozenblaadjes en snoep over de processie beneden, een traditie die al generaties lang loopt.
