If you want authentic Maltese food, skip the main street restaurants. There's a little eatery near the bus station that serves excellent rabbit stew for a good price.
Paola is less polished than other Maltese towns but has a real local feel. Prices are reasonable and you won't find many tourists here, which is a plus.
Buy bus tickets in advance from the kiosk rather than on the bus to save a couple euros. Also, morning visits to the Hypogeum are less crowded, book online way ahead.
The weather was sunny during my visit but it got quite windy in the evenings. Not the ideal beach spot if you're after calm waters.
Paola has a gritty charm. The food is decent but not outstanding. If you like history, a couple of days is enough. Watch out for sudden rain though!
