Cebu is generally safe and foreigner-friendly, but petty crime and taxi overcharging are the main concerns for visitors. Petty theft, unlicensed drivers, and inflated prices are the things to watch most. Stay alert in crowded markets and around transport hubs, and always use official or app-based taxis.

Hoe het werkt: Drivers without official credentials approach arrivals outside the terminal and quote inflated flat rates, sometimes 3 times the metered fare, then may refuse to use the meter.
Hoe je het vermijdt: Walk to the official taxi rank or book through the Grab app. Insist on the meter before the ride starts.
Hoe het werkt: Some taxi drivers claim the meter is broken or insist on a flat rate for trips to tourist areas, charging well above the metered price.
Hoe je het vermijdt: Refuse rides without a working meter. If the driver will not start it, take the next taxi.
Hoe het werkt: Exchange counters in tourist-heavy malls and near major hotels advertise eye-catching rates but apply wide spreads or hidden fees, giving you far less than the bank rate.
Hoe je het vermijdt: Use banks or reputable licensed exchange counters and compare rates before converting large amounts.
Hoe het werkt: Thieves on motorcycles grab phones or bags from pedestrians, especially along busy streets and near transport stops, then disappear into traffic.
Hoe je het vermijdt: Keep phones and bags secured and out of sight when standing near roads. Avoid walking with your phone in your hand.
Hoe het werkt: Tricycle and habal-habal drivers quote high flat fares to visitors who do not know local rates, especially for short hops between landmarks.
Hoe je het vermijdt: Ask the price before boarding and compare with the approximate 30 to 50 peso rate for short rides. Negotiate firmly or walk.
Sla straatverkopers over: boek officiële tickets en rondleidingen met gratis annulering.
Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)
Eerlijke taxiprijs (officieel, overdag): ₱250 - ₱450 (€3,5 - €6,5). Use the official airport taxi rank or book through the Grab app. Unlicensed drivers outside the terminal often quote 2 to 3 times the metered rate. Agree on the fare or insist on the meter before starting.
Fooi geven: Not mandatory. 10% is appreciated in restaurants when service is good. Small tips for porters and taxi drivers are fine but not expected.
Couverts en servicekosten: Most restaurants automatically add a 10% service charge. Check the menu or bill before ordering. Prices on menus usually already include or clearly state service charge.
Always choose to be charged in Philippine pesos and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Independent ATMs in malls and tourist areas often add a 200 to 250 peso withdrawal fee.
