Beklim het smalle ronde wandelpad dat de buitenste verdedigingswal bekroont, en je vindt verborgen schietgaten en kronkelende doorgangen die werden gebruikt om de verdediging te coördineren en nu nieuwsgierige ontdekkingsreizigers verblijden.
Hoogtepunten: Zeven stevige halfronde torentjes omsluiten de buitenste ronde vesting, waardoor een echohol ontstaat waar voetstappen weerklinken tegen bakstenen muren van ongeveer drie meter dikte en de smalle schietgaten nog vaag ruiken naar oude kalkmortel. Elk jaar, tijdens de luide, kleurrijke Lajkonik-processie, raast een ruiter in een rietpaardenkostuum door de boog en tikt toeschouwers aan met een houten knots om geluk te brengen en herinnert de lokale bevolking aan een eigenaardige overwinningslegende die eeuwen teruggaat.

- Photograph the gate and Barbican from the Planty park side for a wide view with the street leading toward the Main Square.
- Visit before 9:30 or after 17:00 to avoid coach groups and catch the best light.
- Skip long indoor exhibits when short on time, the exterior fortifications provide most of the atmosphere.
