Korte feiten: Dit waddeneiland dat de lagune van Ria Formosa beschut, is de thuisbasis van 1.000 permanente bewoners die opgroeiden zonder auto's, alleen met zanderige voetpaden. Hoge gebouwen of resorts bestaan hier niet; in plaats daarvan zijn er houten loopbruggen en felgekleurde vissershuisjes.
Hoogtepunten: De lokale bevolking speelt 's avonds nog laat een traditioneel kaartspel genaamd Sueca in het enige café van het eiland, en vanaf het zand kun je het gelach en het geklap van de kaarten horen. Het hele oostelijke stuk zand verschuift zo veel door winterstormen dat de vorm van het strand van jaar tot jaar duidelijk verandert.

- Take the early ferry (around 8:30 AM) to experience the island before day-trippers arrive and watch fishermen unload their catch.
- Bring sandals or water shoes for the 15-minute boardwalk trek from the ferry dock to the ocean side, as the sand gets scorching by midday.
- Skip the closest restaurant to the ferry stop and walk 5 minutes further to the one with the blue door for better grilled fish and fewer flies.
- Pack a windbreaker even on sunny days, the Atlantic breeze picks up sharply after 3 PM along the unprotected eastern beach.
