Hoogtepunten: Verscholen in de bovenste terrassen vertellen tientallen handbeschilderde azulejo-panelen de volledige boog van de Portugese geschiedenis, van het Tijdperk van de Ontdekkingen tot de revolutie van 1975. Het paleis zelf, het voormalige privéjachtverblijf van koning João, ligt boven een keten van kunstmatige meren waar zwarte zwanen naast reuzenkoi zo groot als kleine honden glijden.

- Wear grippy shoes: the path drops steeply from the entrance down to the lakes and back up is a serious climb.

- Skip the indoor art collection if your time is tight and save your energy for the outdoor terraces and viewpoints.
- Take the cable car up to Monte and walk downhill into the garden entrance to avoid the steepest ascent.
