Korte feiten: De obsessieve verzamelwoede van één man gedurende vier decennia bracht meer dan 6.000 stukken bijeen, variërend van Egyptische artefacten tot Franse decoratieve kunsten. Het gebouw zelf is een meesterwerk van de Portugese modernistische architectuur uit de jaren 1960, rondom een rustige tuinbinnenplaats.
Hoogtepunten: Gulbenkian selecteerde persoonlijk elk stuk in dit museum en zijn smaak neigde naar perfectie in plaats van trends. Je ziet een enkele ruimte waar een 14e-eeuws Armeens verlucht manuscript naast een Lalique glazen vaas en een schilderij van Rembrandt staat, puur gekozen omdat de verzamelaar ervan hield.
