Korte feiten: At 103 meters tall, this is the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world. Its original 19th-century predecessor was famously demolished by Stalin in 1931 to make way for a giant Soviet palace that never got built.
Hoogtepunten: Look closely at the exterior marble panels: they were salvaged from the same quarry that supplied stone for Napoleon's tomb in Paris. The cavernous main hall holds 5,000 worshippers and the dome rises 60 meters above the floor, decorated with detailed frescoes of biblical scenes that took artists three years to complete.

- Visit the lower Church of the Transfiguration, an exact replica of the original cathedral's lower church that survived demolition.
- The observation deck at the 40-meter level offers the best photo angles of the Kremlin and Moscow skyline just before sunset.
- Skip the overpriced souvenir stalls outside and buy authentic religious items from the small shop inside the lower church.
- Women should bring a headscarf and wear skirts past the knee; loaner scarves are available at the entrance but can run out on busy days.
