Early morning hours (08:00-10:00) are ideal; when the lake surface is calm, the sound of the waterfall is heard more clearly and sunlight creates rainbows in the water droplets. The rainy season (September-November) is when the water flow is at its strongest.

Korte feiten: Deze waterval die uit rode rotsen stroomt is de enige grote natuurlijke waterbron die in het Kivumeer uitmondt en verliest zelfs in het droge seizoen zijn debiet niet. De plaatselijke bevolking gelooft dat het water geneeskrachtig is; elk jaar in augustus wordt er rond de waterval een traditioneel waterfeest gehouden.
Hoogtepunten: Achter de waterval is er een kleine grottoegang waar u achter het donderende water doorheen kunt lopen; binnen blijft de lucht altijd koel en echoot het geluid van het water. Volgens de verhalen van de lokale kinderen gelooft men dat een oude vrouw in de diepte van de grot elke regentijd de waterval een nieuw lied leert.
Insidertips
- Wear shoes with waterproof soles against slippery rocks; the ground near the waterfall is always wet.
- You can climb onto the large rock in front of the waterfall and step barefoot into the water, but the rocks are very slippery.
- For the best photo spot, try the wooden platform on the left side of the waterfall; the light looks wonderful from here at sunset.
- On minibuses coming from Kibuye, just say "Ndaba" to the driver before getting off, and they will drop you at the village entrance.
