Church of Saint Sava (Hram Svetog Save)
Beste tijd om te bezoeken
Early morning on weekdays offers softer light on the domes and far fewer visitors, ideal for photos and quiet reflection. Late afternoon can also be pleasant when light warms the marble.
Budgettips
Main nave entry is free; the crypt museum and treasury require a small ticket bought on site, prices vary so bring cash. Student and senior discounts are often available, check the entrance desk to save.

Korte feiten: Stepping inside, visitors are immediately struck by a soaring white dome that crowns one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, the cavernous nave amplifying every whisper. Golden mosaics and glinting iconography cover vast stretches of wall and dome, catching sunlight so the interior feels like a luminous Byzantine treasure.
Hoogtepunten: Step inside and the dome, rising about 70 meters, turns sunlight into a river of gold over more than 4,000 square meters of glittering mosaic. Locals whisper that the site marks the hill where a revered saint's relics were burned by Ottoman forces in 1595, and people still press their palms to the cool marble steps and light candles as a hush settles over the courtyard.
Insidertips
- Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered are appreciated during services and by staff.
- Arrive early on weekdays or late afternoon to avoid service crowds, avoid Sunday morning liturgies when access can be restricted.
- Photographers get the best exterior shots from the plateau on the west side, and use a wide-angle lens inside while avoiding flash during services.
- Buy the ticket for the crypt and treasury at the entrance desk to save time, carry cash as card machines can be unreliable.
