Korte feiten: De Donau heeft dit 100 kilometer lange kloofstelsel in miljoenen jaren uitgesleten en daarmee de meest dramatische rivierdoorgang van Europa gecreëerd. Bij het smalste punt torenen rotswanden tot 300 meter boven het water uit, waar de rivier zich tot slechts 150 meter breed perst.
Hoogtepunten: De Tafel van Trajanus, een Romeinse gedenkplaat die rechtstreeks in de rotswand is uitgehakt, markeert nog steeds de plek waar het leger van keizer Trajanus in het jaar 100 een 33 meter brede weg langs de verticale rotsmuur aanlegde. Bij zonsondergang valt het gouden licht op de oude inscriptie en gloeit de hele kloof amberkleurig, precies zoals bijna tweeduizend jaar geleden voor de Romeinse legionairs.

- Bring binoculars to spot the Roman plaque (Trajan's Table) high on the opposite cliff face.
- Visit on a weekday morning to have the viewpoint nearly to yourself.
- Wear sturdy shoes with grip if you want to climb the short rocky path above the main viewing platform.
- Pack a light jacket even in summer, as the gorge channel creates strong winds that drop temperatures significantly.
