Korte feiten: Van de 8 kilometer aan gangen in de Demänovská Vrijheidsgrot is 2,1 kilometer toegankelijk voor bezoekers en de ingang opent zich vanuit een 60 meter diepe kloof. De grot werd in 1921 ontdekt en is sindsdien een van de meest bezochte druipsteengrotten in Slowakije, met meer dan 200.000 toeristen per jaar.
Hoogtepunten: Een van de meest indrukwekkende zalen van de grot is de 45 meter hoge Kathedraal, waar slanke druipsteenkolommen aan het plafond hangen en schitteren in het licht van de schijnwerpers, alsof ze uit edelstenen zijn gehouwen. De weerspiegeling van de kristalheldere meren en de constante temperatuur van 16 °C creëren een bijzonder microklimaat dat je nergens anders zult tegenkomen.
Insidertips
- Put on a thick sweater even in summer, as the cave is a constant 6-7 degrees throughout.
- Photography is permitted even without a tripod, but flash does not bring out many formations nicely, so try to take advantage of the natural colored lighting.
- The last daily tour is usually less crowded than the morning time slots.
- The parking lot in front of the cave is free, but in the tourist season it is worth arriving early for the spaces.
