Korte feiten: Halvemaanvormig en bijna twee kilometer lang ligt het strand aan de Indische Oceaan met turquoise wateren die rustig blijven tijdens de zuidwestmoesson van november tot april. Precies aan het ene uiteinde steekt een massieve rotsformatie genaamd Parrot Rock op uit de ondiepten, te voet volledig bereikbaar bij laag tij.
Hoogtepunten: Bij zonsopgang duwen lokale vissers nog steeds hun kano's met uitleggers de branding in met technieken die generaties lang zijn doorgegeven, hun silhouetten afgetekend tegen de opkomende zon. Tussen december en maart kun je blauwe vinvissen en potvissen zien spuiten op slechts enkele kilometers uit de kust, waardoor dit een van de beste plekken ter wereld is om vanaf het land walvissen te spotten.
Insidertips
- Walk to Parrot Rock at low tide for a 360-degree view of the coastline, but avoid slippery rocks during the climb.
- The far southern end near the palm grove is much quieter than the main stretch with far fewer vendors.
- Skip the restaurants right on the main beach path and walk one street inland for better seafood at half the price.
- Book a whale watching tour early in the morning (6:00 AM departure) for calmer seas and fewer crowds on the boat.
