Korte feiten: Meer dan 200 militaire families woonden ooit opeengepakt op één heuvel, hun huizen zo dicht op elkaar gestapeld dat buren via de daken naar hun voordeur moesten. Een sloopbevel stond op het punt het wirwarachtige doolhof met de grond gelijk te maken, maar natuurbeschermers kwamen in actie, en rond 2010 waren de steegjes veranderd in een thuis voor wisselende kunstenaarsresidenties.
Hoogtepunten: De huizen hier zijn een handgemaakt lappendeken van gered baksteen, beton en verroest tin, elke uitbreiding toegevoegd naarmate gezinnen groeiden, zodat geen twee gevels hetzelfde zijn. De schuilkelder uit de jaren zestig slingert nog steeds onder de steegjes door, koel en schemerig, met tunnels die families vroeger in staat stelden om rechtstreeks naar de rivieroever te rennen.
