Korte feiten: Een voormalige Byzantijnse kerk die werd omgevormd tot moskee en nu een museum is, herbergt een van de beste voorbeelden van Byzantijnse mozaïeken en fresco’s. Hoogtepunten: De mozaïeken beslaan meer dan 5.000 vierkante voet en tonen diepe blauwtinten, goud en rood die glinsteren in het natuurlijke licht dat door de ramen valt. Een opvallende scène is de levendige afbeelding van de Anastasis, waarin Christus de poorten van de hel opent en zo het dramatische geestelijke verhaal in verbluffend detail weergeeft.
