Korte feiten: Sandstone carved by ancient seas and glacial meltwater created 14 miles of hiking trails through deep ravines. The park's 2,382 acres protect old-growth forest where some trees predate European settlement by centuries.
Hoogtepunten: You can scramble up ladders and squeeze through narrow rock crevices on Trail 3, passing under a massive sandstone bridge called the Punch Bowl that was carved by swirling glacial meltwater 14,000 years ago. Unlike most state parks, you actually hike through the streambed itself, wading across Sugar Creek multiple times as the canyon walls close in around you.
Insidertips
- Wear water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting soaked: you'll cross Sugar Creek multiple times, and the water can be knee-deep in spring.
- Trail 3 is the most dramatic route but also the most demanding: bring a small flashlight to see into the deepest crevices and rock shelters.
- Skip Trail 1 if you're short on time: it parallels the road and lacks the canyon scenery of Trails 2 through 10.
- The suspension bridge near the parking lot offers a stunning overhead view of Sugar Creek and the sandstone cliffs, especially in late afternoon light.
