Fatos rápidos: Covering an area of over 6,400 square meters, the interior is almost entirely sheathed in shimmering gold mosaics depicting biblical scenes. Over 100 million individual glass tiles were used to create these mosaics, a project that consumed more than 2,200 kilograms of pure gold.
Destaques: Stand under the central dome and look up: Christ Pantocrator stares back with Byzantine intensity, his right hand raised in blessing, a mosaic composed of thousands of gold-leaf tesserae that catch the shifting afternoon light. The columns supporting the nave are recycled Roman originals, each one a smooth, cool cylinder of granite or marble with a distinct veining pattern, repurposed from ancient pagan temples.
