The only place in the world where a real fighter jet hangs over the city as a war memorial. You stand under the wings of a MiG-17 and feel the weight of history that took place here.

Fatos rápidos: This monument consists of a MiG-17 fighter jet weighing over 500 tons, which dominates the city skyline. It commemorates the victims of the bombing of Hargeisa in 1988, when tens of thousands of civilians died during the civil war.

Destaques: Originally it was a Somali government plane that dropped bombs on its own citizens right at this very spot. Today it stands as a witness to the trauma endured and a symbol of peace. Locals simply call it "the airplane" because everyone knows its story.

A place where you can look into the faces of artists from 7,000 years ago. Under a rock overhang, a gallery of thirty meters of painted cows and shepherds in vibrant ochre and white tones awaits you.

Stop in the heart of Hargeisa and let yourself be awed by the majestic white silhouette that rises to the sky. You will see the living center of faith, where thousands of worshippers gather daily under giant domes.

Fatos rápidos: The Sheikh's Mosque in Hargeisa is among the largest mosques in all of Somalia and can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers daily during prayers. Its dazzling white facade with three prominent domes and two 65-meter-high minarets is visible from afar and forms the city's dominant landmark.

Destaques: Locals say that during Friday prayers, so many people crowd inside the mosque that the last rows sit all the way out in the courtyard, and their chanting resonates throughout the entire neighborhood. A unique natural ventilation system using specially designed grilles in the domes can cool the interior by up to 8 degrees without a single air conditioner.

A place where, they say, earth meets sky and wishes come true. The climb to the top rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the endless savannah.

Fatos rápidos: Two hill-like formations resembling female breasts reach heights of up to 140 meters. Locals believe the hills have healing power and for centuries pilgrimages for fertility have been held there.

Destaques: A peculiarity is that the hills change color during the day. In the morning they are golden brown, at noon almost white, and at sunset they glow reddish. Geologists to this day cannot exactly explain why the rock composition is so unique compared to the surrounding landscape.

Weather was decent in December but the dust gets everywhere. Pack a scarf for your face if you're not used to it.

Mixed feelings. Some parts are beautiful and raw but the lack of infrastructure gets tiring. Not for first time travelers.

Came for 3 days, stayed a full week. The energy here is something else. Markets are chaotic but the roasted goat is unforgettable.

Friday mornings are dead quiet for shopping. Everything closes for prayers. Plan your market visits for Saturday instead.

Exchange money at the main market stalls not the hotels. You get 10-15% more. Also carry small bills for taxis and tea stalls.
