People have paid to cross this spot since 1225, when the medieval toll bridge replaced a risky ferry, yet today the span is free for everyone on foot.
Destaques: That small chapel mid-span is leftover from a brutal medieval test: the accused were tossed into the Rhine from the rail, and anyone who clawed back to the surface was declared innocent by divine judgment. The water still runs fast and cold enough for that ritual to make sense, especially on spring melt days when the current yanks hard at the piers.
