Sobre
Fatos rápidos: Sitting right on the Albert Dock waterfront, the building was originally a warehouse for cargo like tobacco, brandy, and spices. Its collection includes over 2,000 objects that tell the story of Liverpool's rise as one of the world's greatest port cities, plus the actual remains of a slave ship.
Destaques: In an unassuming corner, you'll find the actual muster roll from the slave ship Zong, whose 1781 massacre of 133 enslaved people forced overboard sparked the abolition movement. It's one of the most emotionally charged historical documents in Britain, displayed alongside a recreated hold that lets you feel the claustrophobic darkness and smell of pitch and sweat.
Dicas de quem conhece
- Start at the top floor and work your way down to avoid the morning crowds who gather at ground level.
- The Seized! gallery smells like actual tobacco and rum barrels, a rare sensory detail that makes the smuggling stories stick.
- Pop into the waterfront cafe on the ground floor for coffee with a direct view of the Three Graces across the dock.
- Allow 20 extra minutes for the temporary exhibition spaces near the exit, they often rotate in unexpectedly good displays.
