Fatos rápidos: A fortaleza se eleva a 20 metros de altura com paredes de terra compactada, cobrindo aproximadamente 4 hectares do centro de Bukhara. Depois que as forças russas bombardearam a fortaleza em 1920, apenas cerca de 20 por cento das estruturas originais sobreviveram.

Destaques: A praça do Registan diretamente em frente à fortaleza já sediou execuções públicas toda sexta-feira, com prisioneiros condenados jogados da rampa elevada do portão. Um fato pouco conhecido: o último emir escapou por um túnel subterrâneo secreto quando o Exército Vermelho rompeu as muralhas em 1920, deixando para trás seu harém e tesouro.

• Skip the guided tour and pick up the 10,000 som map at the entrance instead, it covers the same information at your own pace.
• Climb to the top of the gate ramp for the best view of the Registan square and the city skyline.
• Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes because the packed earth paths and uneven staircases inside the fortress are dusty and slippery.
• Visit the small throne room on the right after entering the main gate, it has the most intact original ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
