Rio de Janeiro is a spectacular city but requires street-smart behavior. Violent crime rates are a real concern, especially in certain areas, and tourists should stay alert in crowded spots and on the beach. The main risks for visitors are opportunistic theft, overpriced or rigged taxis, and money-related traps, so use official transport and keep valuables minimal.

1. Beach and crowd theft
Kako funkcioniše: Thieves work in groups on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, grabbing phones, bags, and jewelry while people sleep, swim, or are distracted. Snatch-and-run on streets and buses is also common.
Kako to izbeći: Leave passports and valuables at your hotel. Take only cash and an inexpensive phone to the beach, and keep items in front of you.
2. Distraction and pickpocket teams
Kako funkcioniše: One person bumps you, spills something, or asks for help while a partner lifts your wallet, phone, or bag. Often targets tourists with cameras or visible phones on busy streets and at sights.
Kako to izbeći: Keep bags zipped and in front of your body. Ignore people who crowd you and step away if someone tries to distract you.
3. Unlicensed airport drivers
Kako funkcioniše: Drivers without official markings approach travelers inside or just outside the terminal with flat 'special' prices well above the meter rate. Some claim the official rank is closed or far away.
Kako to izbeći: Walk past unsolicited offers and use only the official taxi rank at the terminal exit. Uber and 99 through their apps are also reliable.
4. Poor-rate exchange kiosks
Kako funkcioniše: Exchange booths in tourist areas advertise eye-catching rates but add large commissions, effective spreads, or minimum fees, leaving you well below the market rate. Some are street changers with fake notes.
Kako to izbeći: Use bank ATMs for cash and decline conversion at the terminal. Compare the effective rate including fees before exchanging.
5. Inflated or double-charged bills
Kako funkcioniše: Some restaurants in tourist zones add extra items, round up totals, or present a bill with an odd service line. Bills can be handwritten and hard to verify, especially in busy venues.
Kako to izbeći: Check every line of the bill, confirm the total and whether serviço is included before paying. Question any item you did not order.

Poštena cena taksija (zvanična, dnevna): 130 R$ - 180 R$ (22 € - 31 €). Use the official taxi rank at the terminal exits. Metered fares to Copacabana or Ipanema typically run 130 to 180 BRL. Avoid drivers who approach you inside arrivals and offer flat prices.
Najbolja alternativa: Executive coach (Alvorada/Real Auto Ônibus) to central bus station, then metro or local bus (22 R$ (3,74 €), oko 60 min)

- 5,20 R$ (0,89 €) (Single metro or bus fare with the RioCard prepaid card. Cash fares on city buses are slightly higher.)

- With RioCard, tap on the validator as you enter the bus or pass through the metro turnstile. Validate at the start of each journey. Buses require tapping inside, near the driver or middle door area.

- 250 R$ (42,55 €). Fare inspectors on buses and metro check tickets; the fine for riding without a valid payment is around 250 BRL.

- RioCard is the official prepaid card, sold at metro stations and some newsstands. Contactless bank cards are not yet accepted on all Rio buses and metro gates.

Napojnica: Service charge of 10% is usually added to restaurant bills and is included. If not shown, 10% is customary. Taxi drivers do not expect tips. Porters and guides are tipped small amounts.

Always choose to pay in Brazilian reais and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Some independent ATMs at tourist spots charge high withdrawal fees, so check the screen before confirming.

- Downtown and central station areas: Around the main bus station and central metro stations late at night, keep bags closed and stay in well-lit areas with other people. Petty theft is more common in the evening when streets empty out.
- Favela edge areas and hillsides: Some hillside communities bordering tourist neighborhoods have higher crime rates. Tourist advisories recommend not walking alone into unfamiliar hillside areas, especially after dark, and following local guidance on which routes are safe.
