Quick facts: The largest collection of birds in all of Italy is kept here, with over 3,000 specimens. The collection also includes incredible fossils from the Sicilian cave bear, over 20,000 years old.
Highlights: In the display cases of this museum there is a complete skeleton of a dwarf elephant, a species that once roamed Sicily before going extinct. Imagine an animal the size of a pony that lived on the island tens of thousands of years ago, whose skeleton is now just a breath away.
Insider tips
- Bring a camera, flash photography is prohibited but the exhibits are fantastic for photographing in natural light.
- Start from the first floor and the fossil hall, it is the absolute highlight of the collection.
- Do not miss the small room with dioramas of Sicilian caves, they look surrealistically realistic.
- After the museum, walk to the nearby La Praiola bay, it is only a 10-minute walk.
