Quick facts: Flowing through the dense forests of the Ratnapura district, this waterfall drops from a height of 30 meters and its shape is exactly like a Bodhi tree leaf. Cascading down in three tiers, the water joins the Kuruwita River, which later becomes part of the Kalu River.
Highlights: During the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak, the roar of the waterfall can be clearly heard up to a kilometer away, and the spray of water all around creates a rainbow-like spectacle. Locals believe that bathing under this waterfall cures skin diseases, which is why thousands of pilgrims visit here every year.
Insider tips
- Wear shoes with good grip due to the narrow valley and slippery path; going in slippers or sandals can be dangerous.
- There is a small platform on the left side of the waterfall which offers the best photo angle of the entire waterfall; reach there before 8 am on weekends.
- Do not swim directly under the waterfall, the water pressure can be very strong; instead bathe in the natural pool formed on the side.
- There are no food shops nearby, so be sure to carry a water bottle and some light snacks with you.
