Best time to visit
The best time is from 6 to 9 in the morning, when elephants come near the river and the weather remains cool. The months from December to March are most favorable when wildlife is easier to spot.
Budget tips
For foreign tourists, the entry fee is around 3000-4000 rupees and the jeep safari has to be hired separately. You can save a little with online booking, and sharing a jeep with a local guide is more affordable.

About
Quick facts: Spread over 32,000 hectares, this sanctuary is home to over 500 elephants roaming freely. More than 200 species of birds are found here, including the Sri Lankan peacock and eagle.
Highlights: This is one of the few places where you can see elephants up close without the fear of tigers or leopards. In the morning, when the mist clears, herds of elephants can be seen bathing along the riverbank, a sight that is truly unforgettable.
Insider tips
- Wear khaki or green colored clothes and avoid bright colors so as not to distract the animals.
- Book an open-top jeep for the safari; photography is difficult in a closed jeep.
- Animals are rarely seen between 12 pm and 3 pm, so choose morning or evening time.
- Be sure to carry binoculars and a water bottle with you; water is not available inside the park.
