Quick facts: Telescopes are free for all visitors to use, weather permitting. It houses the Zeiss 12-inch refracting telescope, which has been available for free public use since 1935.
Highlights: Here you can stand in the same spot where James Dean looked up at the sky in his final film "Rebel Without a Cause." As the sun sets and the Hollywood lights come on, a view opens up that stretches from the Pacific coast to the San Gabriel Mountains.
Insider tips
- Enter through the back door. There are fewer people in line and the view is just as good.
- If the parking lot is full, park on the street below and walk 5 minutes uphill.
- Bring your own picnic basket. There are lawns in front of the building where locals enjoy the sunset.
- For photos, the best angle is on the east side stairs of the building, where the entire Los Angeles skyline opens up.
