Stayed 3 nights which was more than enough. The architecture is charming but some museums felt a bit dull. Honestly, I expected stronger cultural vibes but still worth a visit.
I was surprised by how friendly people were here, and the sake was superb. Not many English signs though so prepare to wing it. Would skip the big festivals unless you like huge crowds.
If you want real local food, avoid restaurants around the main square. Walk 2 blocks away and you’ll find better prices and tastier dishes. Ask locals for ramen spots, they know best.
Many museums and attractions offer free admission mornings on specific days, check their websites. Also, the Takayama Festival floats are incredible but arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
Buy your train ticket from Nagoya in advance, the Hida limited express sells out fast especially on weekends. Also, some local buses don’t accept cards, have cash ready.
