An open-air museum where a neighborhood paints its whole history across giant bridge pillars. Wander past more than 100 murals while the freeway rumbles overhead.
More than 100 murals climb the massive concrete pillars that hold up a freeway bridge across nearly 8 acres of public greenspace. Neighborhood residents and artists forced the city to halt construction here back in 1970, and the rescued concrete has been painted with stories ever since.
Salvador Torres and hundreds of neighbors camped beneath the bridge for 12 days armed with shovels and pickaxes to stop a police substation from going up. Their standoff worked, and the rescued pillars now carry Victor Ochoa's Quetzalcoatl serpent whose painted coils wrap an entire column.
Pound for pound, no free spot in the city delivers a better sunset. Stand on the bluffs and watch waves explode into sea spray forty feet below.
The park hugs about 1.5 miles of sandstone bluffs that plunge into the Pacific, carved by the ocean into sea caves and arches. Nearly 70 stairs let you scramble down to tide pools where you can spot hermit crabs and tiny octopus when the tide pulls back.
At low tide, the beach at the southern end opens up like a secret amphitheater, letting you walk into caves that vanish entirely when the water rises. Sunsets here turn the sandstone a deep amber, and on a clear evening you might catch the famous green flash right as the sun's final sliver disappears below the horizon.

If you're visiting the museums in Balboa Park, check their websites first. Many offer free admission on certain Tuesdays or the first Sunday of the month. Saves you like 20 bucks.
San Diego surprised me. Didn't expect the craft beer culture to be so strong. The coastal views from La Jolla were stunning. Felt safe walking around even at night.
The zoo is incredible but honestly the rest was just okay for me. Food was decent. Sunsets were beautiful though. Probably better if you're with kids or want a relaxing trip.
Honestly a bit overhyped. Beaches are nice but parking was a nightmare everywhere we went. Gaslamp Quarter felt like a generic party street. Glad I went but won't rush back.
Pro tip: skip the seaport village tourist traps and head to North Park for dinner. Way better food, half the price, and you get a real local vibe instead of chain restaurants.
