Yinchuan surprised me honestly. Thought it'd be just a desert town but the lake areas are super green and pleasant. Food is cheap and salty in a good way. Just know most signs are only in Chinese so download a translator.
Came for 2 days, wish I had done 3. The Helan Mountain petroglyphs blew me away but honestly the beef noodles in the old town were the highlight. Dry heat in October was perfect for walking around.
Most of the museums like the Ningxia Museum have free entry but you need to book a time slot on their WeChat mini program the night before or they turn you away. The Western Xia museum is the only one worth paying for, do that first and skip the rest.
The Nanguan Mosque at sunset was stunning but everything else felt like your average mid-size city. 2 days is plenty. Summer gets brutal hot though, I'd aim for September or May if you have a choice.
Skip the tourist noodle spots in Xinhuadong Street, they charge double. Walk two blocks north to Zhongshan Road and hit the small shops where locals eat, same noodles for 8 yuan instead of 20. Also grab a bus card at the airport, single tickets add up fast.
