حقائق سريعة: Walking the streets reveals preserved frescoes, mosaics and carbonized loaves, offering an uncanny freeze-frame of daily life. Volcanic ash entombed homes and public spaces, and archaeologists have recovered more than 1,150 plaster casts of people caught in the eruption.
