حقائق سريعة: ما يقرب من دزينتين من القرى المتفرقة ما زالت باقية على هذه الجزيرة المنخفضة، رغم أن أطلال البلدة القديمة ما زالت تُظهر آثار سلطنة عمرها 700 عام اتجرت في الذهب والعاج والعنبر. قصيدة كُتبت هنا عام 1728، أوتندي وا تامبوكا عنوانها، بقيت أقدم عمل أدبي سواحيلي معروف، وما زال السكان يتحدثون بالكيبية، وهي لهجة قديمة يربطها بعض اللغويين بأقدم أشكال اللغة.
النقاط البارزة: ما زالت البيوت الحجرية القديمة تتزين بأبواب مدعومة بالنحاس طرقها حرفيون نمت حرفتهم من إنقاذ حطام السفن البرتغالية، وتغادر الصواني المصنوعة الجزيرة على متن المراكب الشراعية باتجاه مدن الساحل الكيني. كما يشير كبار السن إلى عملات وخزف يعودان لعصر مينغ عُثر عليهما قرب الأطلال، مدعومين بأسطورة محلية مفادها أن أسطولاً صينياً رست هنا في القرن الخامس عشر وترك بحارة تزاوجوا مع سكان القرى.

- Pack long sleeves and a headscarf; the sun is fierce and modesty is expected in the villages.
- Ask a local to time the crossing so you arrive at low tide and can walk the exposed sand flats.
- Bring a small flashlight for the dark interior chambers of the old pillar tombs.
- Skip midday wandering and let a guide take you to a dhow yard first, when carpenters are actually at work.
