حقائق سريعة: حوالي 200 نوع من الطيور تبحث عن الطعام وتعشش على طول هذا الشاطئ، مختلطةً مع الزرافات والوعل المائي والحمير الوحشية المقيمة التي تجول بحرية. وهي شبه جزيرة حقيقية على شكل هلال، ارتبطت باليابسة فقط بعد انخفاض مستويات البحيرة بشكل حاد في ثمانينيات القرن العشرين.
النقاط البارزة: الشروق هنا ملك لأفراس النهر، حيث تقضي العشرات منها الليل كله في قضم عشب الشاطئ ثم ترفع أجسامها الضخمة لتعود إلى البحيرة على بُعد أمتار قليلة من حذائك. على المنحدر الشرقي يمكنك الاستلقاء على الحافة والنظر مباشرة إلى الأسفل في مياه صافية تسبح فيها هذه الكائنات العملاقة، بينما تنادي النسور السمكية من الأشجار الميتة بالأعلى.
نصائح من الداخل
- Wear sturdy shoes or light boots, because the 4-km loop mixes soft lakeshore mud with rocky sections and a steep eastern bluff.
- Keep voices low and walk slowly along the waterline at dawn to watch hippos haul themselves back into the lake.
- Pack binoculars and pause at the dead acacia stands on the eastern shore, where fish eagles and cormorants perch.
- Arrive just after opening at 8 AM to beat the tour groups that roll in from 10 AM onward.
