- Rent a bicycle for 500 LKR ($1.50) from a shop near the Clock Tower to cover the full wall circuit and back lanes in under 2 hours.
- Skip the overpriced souvenir shops on the main lane and head to the Pedlar Street market for spices, tea, and cinnamon oil at local prices.
- Wear sturdy shoes with grip: the rampart stairs and the old Dutch flagstone lanes become dangerously slippery after rain.
- For the best photo of the lighthouse, walk to the far southeastern corner of the wall where the cannon sits, framing the white tower against the deep blue sea.
