Turkey is generally welcoming to tourists, but travelers should stay alert in crowded bazaars, around major landmarks, and near transport hubs. The biggest risks are overcharging, aggressive touts, and distraction-style theft rather than violent crime. Use official taxis, meters, and approved exchange services to avoid the most common tourist traps.

كيف تعمل الخدعة: Unlicensed drivers outside the terminal or at busy squares quote a flat rate far above the meter price, or claim the meter is broken and name an inflated price. Some meters are altered to run fast.
كيف تتجنبها: Use the official taxi rank and insist the meter runs. Agree on the fare before starting if the driver refuses the meter.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: Exchange booths near the main tourist squares quote rates well below the official rate and charge hidden commissions. Street money changers offer tempting rates that turn out to be fake or shortchanged.
كيف تتجنبها: Use banks, official exchange offices at airports, or withdraw from bank ATMs. Compare the rate on your phone before exchanging.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: Some restaurants in tourist areas present menus without prices or add a large cover, bread, or service charge not shown upfront. The final bill is much higher than expected.
كيف تتجنبها: Ask to see a menu with prices before sitting down. Check the bill item by item and question any unexplained charges.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: A person drops a brush or shoe shine kit near you, then insists on shining your shoes for free. Afterwards they demand high payment. Others approach with friendly offers of tea or a 'great deal' to lure you into a shop.
كيف تتجنبها: Decline any unsolicited help or free offers. Walk away firmly and do not follow strangers into shops.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: One person distracts you with a question, dropped item, or spilled drink while an accomplice picks your pocket or grabs your bag. Crowded places make this easy.
كيف تتجنبها: Keep bags zipped and in front of you. Be wary of sudden commotion or anyone crowding close.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: Touts near major sights sell tickets at inflated prices or for events that are free or cheaper at official counters. Some sell combination tours that overpromise.
كيف تتجنبها: Buy tickets only from official ticket offices or the official online portals for each sight. Ignore touts who approach you directly.
كيف تعمل الخدعة: A friendly local invites tourists for tea or coffee at a place that then charges an enormous price for a simple drink. The invitation feels like hospitality but ends in a pressured bill.
كيف تتجنبها: Politely decline unsolicited invitations for food or drink. Only accept if you know the establishment and its prices.

الإكرامية: Restaurants: round up or add 5 to 10 percent. Taxis: round up to the nearest amount. Small tips for hotel staff and tour guides are appreciated.
رسوم التغطية والخدمة: Some restaurants add a service charge of around 10 percent to the bill. Check the menu and bill for it before assuming it is included. Menus should show prices; establishments that hide them are a warning sign.
Always choose to be charged in Turkish lira and decline dynamic currency conversion offered by ATMs or card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Some standalone ATM brands charge high withdrawal fees, so check the screen before confirming.
