Acerca de

Datos rápidos: This 18-kilometer riverside trail traces the path of the legendary Nibelungen saga through terraced vineyards and apricot orchards. Over 1,000 years of winemaking history line the route, with clues to the epic poem hidden in village names like Emmersdorf and Melk.

Destacados: You will walk through villages where medieval Nibelungenlied storytellers once performed, and in springtime, the entire valley explodes with the scent of 90,000 blossoming apricot trees. The trail also passes a 900-year-old fortified church whose crypt allegedly holds the bones of a warrior from the Nibelungen tale.

Consejos de expertos

  • Start at Emmersdorf before 9 AM to catch the morning mist lifting off the Danube and have the trail nearly to yourself.
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes, the stone terraces get slippery after rain and some sections involve 200 stone steps carved into hillsides.
  • Stop at a Heuriger (wine tavern) around 4 PM when local winemakers open their doors for fresh young wine and cold platters.
  • Skip the busy Melk Abbey main hours and visit the trail section between Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein instead for the most dramatic cliffside views.
