Acerca de
Datos rápidos: Spanning 280 meters across the Elbe River, this steel cantilever truss bridge was the first of its kind in Europe when it opened. Its distinctive blue-green color comes from over 30,000 liters of paint, giving locals the affectionate nickname "Blaues Wunder."
Destacados: At 141 meters, the central span was so daring for its 1893 construction that engineers required no supporting pillars in the water, a radical first for European bridge building. You can stand underneath at the Loschwitz riverbank and see how the entire 2,500-ton structure hangs together with nothing but rivets and steel tension.
Consejos de expertos
- For the classic postcard shot, photograph from the Körnerplatz side looking up at the steel framework.
- Pack a picnic and head to the grassy Schillerplatz park on the Blasewitz side for a perfect sunset view.
- Walk don't drive: parking is scarce in Loschwitz, and strolling across lets you spot the tiny cable car Vinckebahn running up the hillside.
- Combine your visit with a ride on the historic Schwebebahn cable car that departs from the same Loschwitz hilltop.
