Athens is broadly safe for tourists, but pickpocketing and soft scams are common around the metro, Plaka, and Syntagma. Taxi and restaurant tricks are the most reported, so use the official airport rank and official taxi apps, and check your bill. Violent crime is low; watch your bags in crowded areas.

Cómo evitarlo: Use the official rank and the fixed posted airport fare, or book through the official taxi app. Confirm the fare before starting.
Cómo funciona: Bags and phones are lifted in crowds, especially at busy platforms, escalators, and packed trains around Syntagma, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis entrance.
Cómo evitarlo: Keep bags zipped and in front, and do not keep valuables in back pockets. Stay alert in the 90-minute boarding crush.
Cómo funciona: Someone approaches you 'accidentally', offers help, or asks for directions while an accomplice lifts your bag or camera. Often paired with a dropped item or spilled drink.
Cómo evitarlo: Keep distance, keep your bag in front, and be wary of anyone getting too close while chatting. Move away politely.
Cómo funciona: Some places add bread, cover, or automatic service charges to the bill, or quote one price and charge more. Tourists are more often affected in busy squares.
Cómo evitarlo: Check the menu has prices before ordering, review the itemized bill, and question unexpected charges. Pay by card to keep a record.
Cómo funciona: Booths near main squares advertise no-commission but give poor rates, or add hidden charges that are not clear until after the transaction.
Cómo evitarlo: Prefer bank ATMs for euros and decline dynamic currency conversion. If you do use a booth, ask for the exact rate and total in advance.
Evita a los vendedores callejeros: reserva entradas y tours oficiales con cancelación gratuita.

Precio justo del taxi (oficial, diurno): 40 € - 55 €. Take a taxi from the official rank at the arrivals level. Use the meter or the fixed airport fares posted by the official operator; refuse drivers who offer a set price and no meter. Booking via the Beat or Uber app also gives a fair price.
Mejor alternativa: Metro Line 3 to Syntagma or Monastiraki (9 €, unos 40 min)
Propinas: Tipping is not expected. Round up in cafes and bars, and leave 5 to 10 percent in restaurants if service was good. Taxis: rounding up is appreciated.
Cargo de cubierto y servicio: Cover and service charges are not standard in Athens. Some tourist-area places add a service or bread charge, so check your bill for items you did not order. If you are not given a menu with prices, confirm first. Payment by card is common but carry some cash.
Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion when offered. Prefer ATMs attached to bank branches. Independent ATM machines in tourist areas can charge high fees, so check the fee screen before withdrawing.
