Datos rápidos: Una pequeña isla en el lago Petén Itzá está conectada con tierra firme por un sendero de solo 500 metros de longitud. Los indígenas itzáes construyeron aquí su capital, Tayasal, la última ciudad maya independiente, que cayó recién en 1697.

Destacados: Por la noche, todo el pueblecito de la isla se transforma en un resplandor de colores cuando se encienden las fachadas pastel de las casas y se reflejan en la oscura superficie del lago. Desde el mirador al final de la isla se ve cómo el sendero se convierte en una línea de fuego que une la isla con tierra firme, justo donde antiguamente se celebraban rituales mayas.
