Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (La Martorana)

Mejor época para visitar

Visit mid-morning around 10:00 AM when the sun streams through the windows and makes the mosaics absolutely blaze with gold. Afternoon light works too, but avoid midday when crowds are thickest.

Consejos para el presupuesto

Entry is €2.50, making it one of the most affordable mosaic experiences in Sicily. No free days, but the ticket includes access to the adjacent church of San Cataldo next door, so you get two for the price of one.

Acerca de

Datos rápidos: Its interior is covered floor to ceiling with luminous 12th-century Byzantine mosaics that shimmer gold with every step you take. The church was originally built for a Greek admiral, but the Benedictine nuns who took over in the 1400s added a stunning Baroque makeover to one side.

Destacados: Step inside and look up: the dome mosaic shows four angels literally holding up a medallion of Christ, their wings and robes alive with tiny glass tiles that catch the light differently at every hour. One panel even depicts King Roger II being crowned directly by Christ himself, a rare political power move set in gleaming gold and azure.

Consejos de expertos

  • Sit on one of the wooden pews for a few minutes and just let your eyes adjust to the golden glow, the mosaics reveal more detail the longer you look.
  • Look for the small 12th-century fresco fragment hidden near the entrance, one of the oldest surviving examples in Palermo.
  • Photography is allowed without flash, so use a high ISO setting instead to capture the mosaics in the dim sacred light.
  • Arrive right when it opens at 9:30 AM to have the space almost to yourself before tour groups flood in.
