About

Insider tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes, paths are gravel and can be uneven after rain.
  • Enter via the Omotesando or Kita-sando gates to avoid the busiest Harajuku entrance on weekends.
  • Photograph the massive torii near Harajuku Station and the straight tree-lined approach for iconic shots.
  • Arrive before 9:30 on weekdays to dodge tour buses and catch morning rituals with fewer people.

Visited at 2pm and it was packed, paths were crowded and photos were tough. Free entry is nice but the souvenir shops felt overpriced, the quiet back paths saved the visit.

Arrived at 8am and had almost no line. The shrine grounds are free and the 500 yen Inner Garden was worth it for the peace and cherry blossoms; avoid noon crowds.
